Where does Pima cotton come from?
Pima cotton originated in Peru, more than 5,000 years ago. It is currently grown in the Piura region, in the Piura River valley area, north of the Sechura desert, 981 km north of Lima and close to the border with Ecuador.
Although it is Peruvian, Pima was named after an American Indian people, more precisely from the state of Arizona. It was there that, in the early 20th century, cotton was implanted experimentally.
When talking about natural fiber, the longer and softer the filament, the more noble the touch. The length of the fiber of an ordinary cotton varies between 13 and 19mm. In comparison, Gossypium Barbadense fiber, better known as pima cotton, reaches 34mm.
The result is a cotton fabric with a silky shine and a noble touch, incredibly soft. That is why it is known as Latin American silk.
